Case in point. My friend finished up his 4 year (5 year?) contract with the US Army, and what did he do on his first week back?
Took out a personal loan and ordered a brand new ZL1 Camaro.
Dude comes from a wealthy family and is living at home so it’s not like he’s going to starve, but I’m terrified to think of what kind of terms he got. 15%?20%?

lol my wifes best friend took out a load for a early 2000s Mustang Mach 1 after his deployment, about 6 months into ownershit he got drunk and drove it into the side of a house. nobody was injured but what is it with military dudes and pony cars

The jokes write themselves. Please tell me your friend has the kind of sense of humor where you can use them.

Oh yeah. He’s a goofball, and a genuinely good-natured, incredibly intelligent dude. He’s just got this massive blind spot for anything financial.
Could be worse. He didn't marry a stripper

I wonder what determines whether they get pony cars, or Japanese imports

He ha sn’t had the car long. Give him a chance.

dbag neighbor had a party ... parked outside his place were a busted Camaro, busted Mustang, and a bro truck.

Obviously depends on his credit, and down payment but the rate might not be that bad. I took out a unsecured personal loan to buy the 02 and got 7%. I didn’t care because I wouldn’t be keeping the loan for more than a few months, but still I thought that was low. It was lower than I was quoted than by some banks that finance classics.

whew...i thought you were about to say he came back and murdered a bunch of civilians
then i realized its not a mustang

okay, while I didnt get a loan for anything NEAR as much, the one I got for the daytona was....2.99% as a first time loan.

I’m guessing you’re a rare case. Normally when I here “personal loan” for a $50k+ car I think of rediculously high rates, and long loan terms.

Oh wow. That seems pretty great for a bike
![]() 05/08/2019 at 17:37 |

Yea a personal loan for a brand new car is kind of odd. Also yes, my loan was for 1/3 of that.

Either a pony car or a big truck. My intern was a marine and he has a tundra.

Wow, your friend is a wise man. Usually people buy the camaro/charger/mustang when they sew on E-3!
![]() 05/08/2019 at 17:40 |

Surely he would of got more favourable rates had he bought the car while still in the army.

Oh the stories I could tell...
One sailor in particular, I remember... it’s around 2007 and I had just reported to this shop. This guy had a new 8th gen Civic Si. Over the course of that summer he did th e following; bought a brand new Kawasaki cruiser, wrecked it, traded the now damaged cruiser in for a ZX-6R, then wrecked (and totaled) that bike. Decided he’d had enough of bikes, so he traded his still less than year old Civic Si in on a Mustang GT, then dropped 2 grand on tacky 20" chrome rims. Before the end of the year he had stuffed that and totaled it.

At least he has good taste in cars.
I’ve seen a lot of sailors make horrible money decisions. I may have made some myself. But I also know a lot of people who made very good decisions
Nevermind, saw what you said about about it being a personal loan . Why?!? Could he not get a regular auto loan because of the car price vs. his now non-existent income stream?
![]() 05/08/2019 at 17:44 |

it was just a personal, unsecured loan.

I have worked with folks that cash in 401ks to buy travel trailers...
Not the most financially prudent decision... though I can see myself saying, “if I get through 4 years in the Army I am going to immediately get me a hot car no matter what it takes,” as a motivator...

My last assistant was a submarine operator. He had a mint Fiero. Looked good next to the Miata

Army guys in Aus used to go and get a big V8 Commodore or Ute. Dunno what they’re doing now :(

He should just wait until he’s older to avoid any stereotypes. Oh, wait...

Now he's gonna have more blind spots than that with the Camaro
![]() 05/08/2019 at 19:28 |

Yeah.... Don't ask me. But yes at least the car is nice! I assume, I haven't seen it. He said it's a blue ZL1, that's all I know

Ah yes, the Motorhome retirement plan. I used to take RV trips with my grandparents and when we stopped at RV parks we'd always end up chatting with retired couples that lived more or less full-time traveling the US in their Motorhome. Not the WORST way to do it
![]() 05/08/2019 at 19:35 |

Air Force guys apparently all bought Focus STs and RSes. Both friends I know who were in the air Force got brand new STs as soon as they got out. I assume the RS is the new ride of choice.

Submariners are weirdos so they are the exception. Just think, they have to survive for months in cramped conditions in the dark under the Sea. Surely that would drive anyone mad.

Hmm. Logic checks out

Shit, I mean, on one hand, yeah, super stereotypical. On the other, have you
seen
a ZL1? I did, briefly. It flew by while I was on the highway late at night, going about 90 because midwest. It was gone in two seconds. Those things are amazing!
![]() 05/08/2019 at 19:51 |

Oh I cannot wait to get inside it. I still remember a year ago seeing a Polestar wagon, ZL1 and one of the fancy 911's chasing each other down for miles on a highway. I stayed with them as long as I could just to watch, albeit about 300ft back. I was probably going 90, so they were well into triple digits...

I can only imagine what his insurance must have been like.
![]() 05/08/2019 at 21:06 |

I can’t even imagine. I remember at this time I was paying over $250 a month for my WRX. I ended up selling it to another guy I worked with and buying a CBR1000RR (that may or may not have been the reason the above sailor got a ZX-6R) and a used Ram. My insurance dropped by over 60%.

The Fiero looks like it could be a submarine. It’s a budget Esprit.
![]() 05/09/2019 at 09:29 |

So he’s like, what, 23?
Crazy, but he’s probably got some cash saved, due to not having to pay for room and board, etc., for the past 5 years.

ZING!

It seems like 95% of the Camaros I see are within a mile of a military base . Like, I can go weeks without seeing a single Camaro outside a dealer lot, and if I drive past JBLM I’ll see 30 of them in 15 minutes. And 20 Chargers. Less true of the Mustang, which seems to be popular everywhere.
The one sort of exception to this was a Lingenfelter ZL1 (according to its many stickers and whatnot) that tried to drag race me on International Boulevard once. Instead, we just made loud exhaust noises at each other for awhile.
